Tom welcomes news of Environment Agency cash to boost plans to tackle minewater pollution in Saltburn

Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland Labour MP, Tom Blenkinsop, today (9th November 2011) the news that £700,000 is to be invested by the Environment Agency in the scheme to treat ironstone ochre discharge from old ironstone mine workings which are leaching into Saltburn Gill and running through local woodland valleys to the sea at Saltburn.

Tom said “This is a big boost to the ongoing campaign to clean up the beck which is badly stained, and will complement ongoing work already been undertaken on this project by the UK Coal Authority – the leading agency for dealing with pollution from old mine workings.”

“In turn this also backs up work now being done by Northumbrian Water to clean up seawater and beach quality along the Saltburn foreshore.”

“This is a win-win for the local campaigners who have been doggedly battling to get this work completed, and which I have tried to help by raising the issues in the House of Commons. The success of this work should soon be evident as the EA are now putting a six month deadline for completion.”
